Colin O'Brien will conduct a Continuing Leadership Education (CLE) seminar for the Illinois State Bar Association this April. It will cover the hot topic in the Internet world ... the continuing introduction of hundreds of new generic top-level domains (gTLD). These are the part of an Internet address to the right of the "dot." The familiar .COM, .NETand .ORG now exist alongside brand-specific domains such as .SONY, geographic ones such as .BERLIN, and hundreds of other variations.

How can brand owners protect themselves in this expanded new online world, and how can they leverage the new tools to reach out to customers?

New gTLDs – What Brand Owners Need to Know Now

Keep the Date Open

Partridge IP Law will be hosting a Roundtable/Webinar in mid-January to help businesses prepare for the rapidly expanding Internet. In particular, what should brand owners do to protect trademarks and other key Intellectual Property?

The Generic Top-Level Domain (gTLD) program is several years in the making, and the official rollout began this Fall. The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) - a nonprofit organization charged with managing the organization and structure of the Internet - solicited more than 1,900 suggestions for new top-level domains (the part to the right of the "dot" in a domain name). That means the Interent will expand beyond the now-familiar ..COM, .NET and .ORG to include new industry terms such as .INSURANCE and .PHARMACY and even brand names such as .LAMBORGHINI and .IBM.

ICANN is still in the process of reviewing and rolling out the 1,900 applications submitted, but the first four went live in October 2013.

The purpose of these new domains varies, and on one hand some may offer new opportunities for brand owners to connect with prospects and customers in entirely new ways through gTLDs such as .BANK and .FLORIST.

However, such a vastly expanded Internet also invites the threat of trademark infringement or the dilution of Intellectual Property.

The presentation will cover topics such as registration in the Trademark Clearinghouse and other measures to ensure brands, trademarks and other Intellectual Property remain a key, protected business asset in the new Internet.
